The Government of Makueni County under the Directorate of Environment in partnership with The National Government under Kenya Forest Service(KFS) embarked on reforestation programme aiming at rescuing both Nzaui and Katende hill Forests by allocating Kshs.5 M for the programme.

Of the above funds, Kshs.360,000 was set aside for  rehabilitation of the dilapidated houses which were meant to accomodate the forest rangers manning the forests. The exercise began mid-October 2015, after the Directorate was concerned about the persistent cases of illegal logging, fire outbreaks and charcoal burning.

The directorate opted to effectively carry out the exercise by engaging the Public through formation of Public Management Committee (PMC's), hiring of casuals to carry out the exercise and procurring of the indigenous tree seedlings from the registered groups within the community.

They (PMC's) worked with the citizens through organized groups as casuals working within their allocated areas. The activities  included: Bush clearing, Pitting and Planting. Meanwhile, the Government of Makueni County urges sponsors, stakeholders and well wishers to support this noble cause of rehabilitating the forests to aid in replenishing and protection of the water catchment areas, improvement of biodiversity, enrichment ofecology and the creation of  micro-climatic zones among other numerous benefits.
